Power cut in Jericho

ENGINEERS cut power to about 290 homes and businesses in Oxford’s Jericho area today.

Southern Electric responded to faulty equipment in the Walton Street area at about 2.10pm and halted energy supplies while work was carried out.

Properties in Walton Street, along with Jericho Street, Cranham Terrace, Cranham Street, and Kings Street were all affected.

Full power was restored by 4pm.

A non story but one that you read and even commented on. Probably says a lot about you doesn't it?

Anyway, getting back to the article, there seems to be a lot of power cuts in Oxfordshire, surely more than can be expected.

But not so much a 'non story' for the 200+ homes, and coming so soon after the recent 9% price increases. Time the utility companies were taken back into publuic ownership.

Or even Public Utilities - such as electricity and gas. The original sell-off by Thatcher and her 'cut-purse pirates' was a scandal, only followed by a greater scandal when Labour eventually took over the 'tiller' for 13 years and did nothing to take back the power. Instead, we have endured several decades of ever-more expensive gas and electricity prices, with the various utilities owned by non-British companies and with non-British shareholders keeping all the profits, and with some companies seeming to sail very close to the wind concerning tax avoidance. After all, if one government could spend £billions to bail out the wretched bankers, why not invest public money on buying back something useful - like gas, and electricity to generate money?

I thought it was the nasty energy companies overcharging, but I did some research and yes, they do have 10% profit margins, but 50% (yes FIFTY!) of your bill goes toward funding all these Govt programs offering cheap/free loft and cavity wall insulation.

That's why our bills are so high, and why British Gas et al can offer these "special" deals to insulate your home.

Stop them, and reduce your bills! Also you should seriously look at the Witney based not for profit energy firm Ebico - who offer one tariff for gas/elec and NO standing charge; you can save a lot by switching. Google them and support a local firm!

Embox I heard an interview with them on the radio earlier, they can save you money if you are on a pay as you go meter, or a very low user, but for most families on a good tariff they can't compete. Think about it, if they were cheaper then we would all switch to them.
