A BID to make North Oxfordshire taxi fares the same all year round has failed, but councillors have backed a price increase.

A drivers’ association urged councillors to support a single tariff for day, night, Sunday and public holiday hackney carriage charges.

But Cherwell district councillors opted to keep Christmas and New Year fees the same.

Councillors supported increasing the base rate for day fares from £2 to £2.20 instead of the £2.50 urged by the North Oxfordshire Hackney Association.

But it backed a penny increase for each subsequent 101 metres as requested.

The night, Sunday and bank holiday base rate should also increase from £2.30 to £2.50, they said, while the rest will stay the same.

The cost of a daytime three-mile journey will go from £6.84 to £7.48.

The fees will go out to consultation before any changes in April next year.

Licensing committee chairman Fred Blackwell said: “I think that was the fairest outcome for everyone.”
