Plea for fruity names for A2Dominion's development

BICESTER: Streets in the first phase of the 5,000-home eco-town will be named after fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Developer A2Dominion is now asking people to come up with 50 road names within the theme.

Suggestions so far include Peppermint Crescent, Pippin Orchard, Maris Piper Grove, and Savoy Avenue.

A total of 393 homes, as well as a business centre, school and shops will be built in the first phase of the eco settlement.

Does Rotten Tomatoes qualify?
Personally I would go for White Elephant, it is what it will end up!!

Really? Houses in this county tend to fill up as soon as they are built.

I don't think we'll end up with a ghost town like those in Spain or Ireland, but I could be wrong!

By "White Elephant" I don't think the issue is that they won't sell

You've lost me - if people buy them how will it be a white elephant?

So it was pushed through undemocratically and will cost local taxpayers. While this is is bad, it doesn't make it a white elephant - yet. If nobody buys the houses it will be, but we can't comment until we see what occupancy rates arise.

The blog makes a good point about all such 'eco' developments; whereas they may employ high building standards, they're just as car-dependent as standard new-build estates.

It's far greener to live in a 120-year old Victorian terrace, sensibly updated, and use public transport.

Cherwell's own internal reports have a risk register where they reckognise many of BaECON's comments. BaECON is an organisation who have both development professionals and planning experts as members. We have consistently been baffled by the lemming like headlong promotion of the ECO TOWN.
At last they are starting to smell the coffee, but after permission had been granted.
Joined up thinking? We say not.

Did you know that very few schemes branded by protesters as "white elephant" are unsuccessful?

Watch this space, there are no private developers in tow, it needs a Housing Association (RSL) with public subsidy to get it off the ground and it will be competing in a market in Bicester that will have an over supply of traditional housing.Got a fight on its hands there.
If A2 Dominion build all 394 houses in the exemplar site, which is of course on greenfield land, within 5 years, we will be shocked.
For WHITE ELEPHANT read WOODS FOLLY.

Don't worry Tony, all the families currently on £millions of housing benefit here in Oxford will be forced to fill any empty houses there.

Not so easy, unless they are well healed!!! Of the 394 houses that are consented, A2Dominion have to sell over 250 as open market or shared ownership.

More than 60% shared or private ownership...

That's starting to sound like a very desirable place to live.

Can you describe your understanding of an "Irish type estate"? It may differ to mine.

I visited a new build one just outside Dublin last year, it was very attractive with large detached houses, each with a decent sized, well tended garden and off-street parking.

Is that the same as your understanding?

so will the social housing designers names be used for the vegetable roads names, as they are usually inappropriate for use.probably find in years to come on the court pages names of people from Cabbage Patch, Turnip Row, Pea Moor, and the list grows ...........LOL

Well you have to take your hat off to A2Dominion's PR people. They have tried many stunts, including this one, to win over the public to support this doomed scheme.
If WHITE ELEPHANT isn't appropriate I can't help thinking of Kenny Everett's blonde bimbo who wanted to always be the centre of attention. The 'Look at me me me ' syndrome.
I therefore propose the whole estate be called, au M Everitt.......
CUPID STUNT.
