An opera will be performed in its entirety for the first time in over 250 years tonight after an Oxford University academic reconstructed the composer’s score.
The opera Anacréon was composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau and first performed on October 23, 1754. Its hero is the Ancient Greek poet Anacréon.
The recital, being performed by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Sheldonian Theatre, has been reconstructed by Dr Jonathan Williams, Director of Music at St Hilda’s College.
He found manuscripts scattered throughout libraries in Paris.
The recital has been organised by the university’s Faculty of Music, Music at Oxford, St Hilda’s College and Magdalen College. It takes place at 7.30pm.
