Controversial parking zone begins today

A CONTROVERSIAL controlled parking zone (CPZ) will come into force today.

The Magdalen Road (North) zone has been set up by Oxfordshire County Council and will apply at all times.

It means only residents who have bought £50 permits will be able to park in streets between Magdalen Road and Bullingdon Road including Stanley Road, Leopold Street and Hurst Street.

Permit holders can get up to 50 visitor permits a year with the first 25 free and the next 25 costing £16.

Some time-restricted parking bays have been provided for non-residents.

The plans have been in the pipeline since 2007 for the Magdalen Road area. But it was broken into two zones because of a lack of support in what became the Magdalen Road (South) zone.

Successive consultations showed most residents in the Magdalen Road (North) area supported the zone.

The council will review plans for a south zone – which has run into opposition from many residents – in six months.

"A CONTROVERSIAL controlled parking zone (CPZ) will come into force today." Really? I bet it doesn't. The Div Rd zone was supposed to have started TWO WEEKS AGO but there has been no enforcement so far, and on Friday last week the parking guys (NPL, on motorbikes) had no word of when they would be starting in the Div Rd area. What a shambles.

The Divinity Road scheme has proved to be an absolute bonus for the motorist passing through the area.

Up until recently, the chances of successfully negotiating the Southfield/Divinity Roads in a reasonable time were pretty slim - but now, it's fantastic. With so many empty spaces, it's easy to slow and pass without stopping.

Speaking to my taxi driver at the weekend, he was saying it's the first time that the City or County Council have done anything to ease congestion and speed up traffic flow in the city - I can quite believe it.

A big thank you to everyone in DRAMA and EOARA and the County Council who has helped return the route to a cross-city expressway!
