In a sleepy area of Argentina the biggest, and I mean BIGGEST, dinosaur discovery is under way. Scientists are unearthing, as we speak, a whole new species of dinosaur.

Just like the birth of a new baby, the name has not yet been decided, but we are sure that it is a member of the Titanosaurs.

These guys are massive and thought to be much bigger than the current holder of the biggest dinosaur crown, Argentinosaurus. It is tricky to be certain about a dinosaurs’ size without a complete skeleton but judging by the relative sizes of the bones discovered so far scientists estimate that their new find comes in at about 40 metres long and 20 metres tall, weighing around 77 tonnes! That is the same as 14 African elephants!

You can imagine how excited the palaeontologists leading the dig were when they got the phone call. A local farmer had stumbled on what seemed like a bone… not just any bone but a bone that was bigger, by quite some margin, than he was!

Since then the scientists have uncovered around 200 bones as well as a decent collection of teeth from the carnivores that fed on their remains. These teeth give us more clues about the new Titanosaurs. They must have had mighty tough, leathery skin to cause teeth to break or fall out!

The scientists have also discovered some enormous tree trunks and preserved leaves that may help us understand what the Titanosaurs ate and the environment in which they lived.

Unfortunately, these new-found beasts are unlikely to give us clues about the demise of the dinosaurs.

Scientists think they probably got stuck in thick mud and were unable to get out before starving or being killed. That would surely have been a feast!

José Luis Carballido, the scientist leading the dig, has said that they are only just scratching the surface of the site. He estimates that they have only uncovered about one fifth of the paleontological treasure buried on the farm.

It has been a big year for dinosaur discoveries. Siats meekerorum, affectionately known as Siats (pronounced see-atch), was discovered late last year and is one of the biggest carnivores we have ever found. Named after a mythical man-eating monster described by the Ute people of the region where Siats was found, this guy is endowed with massive teeth designed to kill. Siats is considered a competitor for the infamous Tyrannosaurs Rex.

If you are into battles of beasts then Siats v T-Rex would surely have been one of the most epic battles to witness.

New dinosaur discoveries are not only good fun, and a great opportunity for kids to add to their dino collections, they also give us more opportunities to understand what our Earth was like back then.

There are clues about climate change and the causes of the mass extinction of these seemingly indestructible animals.

During a time when we are hearing about rapidly melting glaciers that spell disaster for our coastlines, we need all the information we can get.
