Grittier politicians have the Klass that Ed Miliband lacks to win a spat on TV, says Rebecca Moore

Last week, Myleene Klass apparently ‘owned’ Ed Milliband live on television. The two were somewhat engaged in a debate about the so-called ‘mansion’ tax (a proposed tax on properties worth over £2m) and Myleene was giving the Labour leader what-for.

Except the two weren’t really ‘engaged’ in a debate – so far as I could tell she was babbling inane tosh and poor ole Ed was clearly thinking that there was no point reasoning with her.

In fact, some people were so offended by her views that an online petition to prevent her being the face of Littlewoods has just gone viral.

The annoying thing is that the people who won’t even bother watching the video will jeer at the fact that a politician – it doesn’t really matter which politician – got ‘owned’ by a pop star-come-model-presenter-or-something.

(Nobody quite knows exactly what she does any more – ‘they’ seem to have stopped caring whether she does anything at all, after she had a jungle shower in a bikini. That kind of thing seems to be enough, nowadays). I shouldn’t be mean – she’s actually from my home town.

I went to her high school, albeit quite a few years after her. So she’s just like me. Or should be. And she thought she was defending people just like her.

She referenced those poor old grannies who have owned their houses for generations and now will be penalised for it.

She pouted about how hard it is to find anything in London for under £2m and how Miliband may as well tax her glass of water if the government needs money that badly.

Because a glass of tap water and a £2m London abode are the same level of luxury.

It’s unfortunate Ed wasn’t more quick-draw. He performed poorly, and responded 12 hours later with a pun-laden tweet, referencing Klass’s embarrassing pop career. A harder politician would have – and should have – smacked down her ill-informed ‘reasoning’ in a heartbeat.

Now, sadly, the very people who are jeering at the fact that Ed got ‘owned’ by Klass haven’t even realised – or don’t care – that -with their cheers and jeers they’re siding with Klass and arguing against the mansion tax.

Another example of how, when it comes to politics these days, it seems that fewer people care about the content than how it comes packaged.

Which may also be true of celebrities.
