What can you buy for one pound these days? Not a lot you might think but in actual fact, you could be quids-in.

The UK’s first online pound shop, hereforapound.com launched last month and it’s already a roaring success, with punters flocking to the site to snap-up everything from batteries, nail polish and chocolate to bleach, bog roll and toothpaste.

And did I mention everything costs just £1? OK, I hear you say, that’s nothing new. We’ve had pound shops on the high street for quite a while now with the likes of Poundland, Pound World and 99p stores (yes, I know, I’m a penny short of the full pound here but work with me on this one).

Instead of having to brave the outside world, floods, biting winds, rain and snow, hereforapound.com lets you shop for bargains while lying on the sofa munching Mars bars. Apart from branded food, drink, cleaning products and toiletries, it also stocks fashion, techie things such as iPod cases and SIM cards, toys, garden and pet products plus seasonal stuff, so for instance at the moment they have loads of Easter eggs including Mickey Mouse and My Little Pony, for, yep, you’ve guessed it, £1. Place your order, click and pay and it’ll be delivered to your door for free if you spend more than £15, if not, it’s £3.50.

And, just to make things even more interesting, another online pound shop is in the frame. poundshop.com is the brainchild of Steve Smith, the brains behind the original Poundland high street shops which opened their doors more than 10 years ago.

It too has an impressive selection of goods on offer, for instance, for new parents there are nappy bags, cotton buds and wet wipes and for drivers there are antifreeze, upholstery cleaner, bicycle locks and lights, L plates, WD40 and ice scrapers.

For the rest of us, there’s DIY, fashion, cleaning, tools, pets, garden, medical, partyware, stationery, toys and games, kitchenware, biscuits, sweets, drinks, chocolate and crisps. Standard delivery is £3.65 and there’s a minimum order of £10. Retail experts expect online pound shops to do really well, partly because the bricks and mortar version are so popular.

Everyone’s favourite brands, from Heinz soup to Fairy Liquid, are less than you’d pay elsewhere.

Judging by the way they’ve thrived, we love our pound shops – 99p stores and Pound World have about 200 shops each, while Poundland has ballooned to 450. And if you still prefer to have a wander around the real thing, Pound World has two stores in Banbury – one in the Castle Quay centre and the other in Banbury Cross Retail Park.

Poundland has four across the county – one in Oxford’s Westgate Shopping centre, another in Cowley’s Templars Shopping Park and two more in Abingdon and Bicester. Finally, the 99p brand is in Templars Square, Cowley, Witney, Didcot and Banbury.

And you never have to ask the price of anything.
