On Friday, we were treated to an evening with Hardeep Singh Kholi; the funniest Sikh Glaswegian that we’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. It was his last tour date, so although he was looking forward to going home, he still gave us a good show.

Set in the modest venue of the Old Fire Station, with a small but lively crowd, we were just meters away from the man himself, allowing him to involve the audience effectively. So close was he and so small was the crowd that we avoided the front for fear of being picked on. We were right to be wary as it turned out, with one poor soul being relentlessly picked on. However in typical British fashion he just laughed nervously and went along with it.

Having never seen his act before, apart from a brief set on Russell Howard’s Good News, we didn’t know what to expect.

But, after a slightly disappointing first half, the gig really got going after the interval. His anecdotes on Sikh life were entertaining and hilarious, the funniest stories involving him being mistaken for other celebrities (Monty Panesar being one), and his chaotic extended family, his set consisting of funny stories and ramblings rather than pure observational gags. Although this meant the laughs per minute ratio was less than the likes of Ricky Gervais, it was a very entertaining evening and we left in good humour. As a regular visitor to Oxfordshire’s theatres, catch him next time around.
