From Sherwood to Woodstock, Katherine MacAlister pursues our favourite outlaw

Another sign that Blenheim Palace is stepping up to the mark – following its Ai Wei Wei exhibition and recent series of Nocturnes which saw Van Morrison ramping it up on stage – is something that will appeal to our younger readers.

Yes, Robin Hood will be lurking in the grounds today and tomorrow with a very interactive appearance designed to appeal to families.

The Cambridge Touring Theatre Company’s in-the-round production was hand-picked by Blenheim and the actors are delighted to be performing in the Pleasure Gardens at the Woodstock palace.

Rosie Humphreys, who started the company 15 years ago to make the sort of shows she wanted to take her children to, says: “It’s all based on family fun and there’s a real gap in the market for it.

“So we choose productions that are the most family-friendly, and turn them into colourful, noisy, musical and interactive shows with lots of jokes. We know what we are doing and are good at it.”

Thus, the larger-than-life, musical adaptation of Robin Hood: The Musical, follows Robin on his adventures with Maid Marion, Little John and Friar Tuck, as they attempt to overthrow the Sheriff of Nottingham. It is aimed at children aged three to 12, who can also take part in pre-show workshops to introduce the characters and work on themed drama activities, songs and games from the show.

“The entire theatre troupe is made up of teachers and workshop leaders,” Rosie continues, “because we want to enthuse our audiences with the same passion that we have.”

Children are encouraged to dress as Marion, princesses or knights, Robin and his Merry Men.

“This is the first time we’ve been to Blenheim so we are very excited,” Rosie adds. “So fingers crossed that they like it and we will be invited back.”

Robin Hood: The Musical
