Newly released DVD brings the Great War to life in colour, as experienced by those who fought in and endured it

WITH the country commemorating the centenary of the start of the First World War, this Sunday’s Remembrance ceremonies are set to be particularly poignant.

The commemorations also present a timely opportunity to learn more about the conflict, billed at the time as ‘the war to end all wars’.

World War 1 in Colour is a landmark series which brings a unique perspective to the events of 1914-1918, which saw 65 million men take arms against one another and a world thrown into chaos.

Re-released on DVD by FremantleMedia International, it presents a definitive guide to The Great War as never seen before – from the slaughter in the trenches, to the war in the air and at sea, and the fighting on the Eastern Front.

Previously only seen as a war that happened in black and white, this six-part series has been painstakingly colourised using the latest computer aided technology to bring the war to life in colour, as experienced by those who fought in and endured it.

Narrated by Sir Kenneth Branagh, it is fronted by Dennis and Brenda Goodwin, who founded The World War One Veterans Association. Both looked after the last 340 survivors.
