They have been two of the most successful US television thrillers in recent years.

So there was plenty of excitement at Comic-Con in San Diego as the cast of Prison Break and the new series of 24 appeared in the 6,500-seat Hall H.

Both shows are returning to TV screens next year, with Prison Break’s original stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Sarah Wayne Callies and Robert Knepper all set to feature in a new nine-episode series.

24: Legacy will see a new hero replacing Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer, with Straight Outta Compton actor Corey Hawkins playing the lead role.

The show’s executive producer Manny Coto said the series was not a “reboot” but an “expansion of the 24 universe”, leaving the door open for a potential return for Kiefer’s character in the future, according to Deadline.

The new series of Prison Break, which is returning after a seven-year break, shows Wentworth’s character Michael Schofield back in prison despite his apparent death at the end of the fourth season.

A clip from the second episode of the new series shows Michael discussing his plans to break out of prison with an inmate who has been jailed for being a homosexual.

Wentworth’s co-star Dominic – who plays Michael’s brother Lincoln Burrows – discussed the horrific head injury he suffered while filming the new series..

He posted an image of his injuries on Instagram at the time, revealing he broke his nose in two places after an iron bar fell on him.

Speaking at Comic-Con, Dominic thanked his girlfriend AnnaLynne McCord, the show’s producers and Wentworth for their support during his recovery.

24: Legacy will be shown in the US in February, while Prison Break is also set to return early next year.
