Director JJ Abrams says he hopes his take on Star Wars will be more than “a boys’ thing”.
JJ, who has taken on the franchise in place of George Lucas, said that by putting the focus on female characters such as Daisy Ridley’s Rey he hopes to appeal to female film fans.
He told Good Morning America: “Star Wars was always a boys’ thing, and a movie that dads could take their sons to.
“And although that is still very much the case, I was really hoping this could be a movie that mothers could take their daughters to as well.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to kids seeing this movie and seeing themselves in it and seeing that they’re capable of doing things that they never imagined possible.”
The director, whose film Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for release later this month, also looked back on when he first saw Star Wars at the age of 11.
“It was a mind-blowing thing because this movie, it was the first time a film that was kind of a fantasy movie looked so real and so authentic,” he said.
“It was funny and romantic and exciting and adventurous, and it had amazing characters. As a kid, it was literally a mind-blowing, mind-altering experience.”
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released in UK cinemas on December 17.
