BBC Radio 1 is to take its Big Weekend to Norwich this year, with pop superstar Taylor Swift announced as one of the first acts.

Thousands of tickets will be given away to listeners for the 12th annual event, with the station saying most will go to people who live in and around the Norfolk city.

The location, at Earlham Park on the weekend of May 23 and 24, was announced by Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw.

Taylor said: “When I think of a UK crowd I think of a sea of people that is moving like an ocean – it’s the most beautiful sight you could possibly witness and I can’t wait to come back. Everyone talks about the festivals in England being the best ones you can go to. I feel like I’ve been missing out – I’m really excited.”

Station controller Ben Cooper said: “You have got to love the BBC and Radio 1 for bringing you Taylor Swift and some of the biggest names on the planet to Norwich for free.”

Norwich is famously the home of Steve Coogan’s fictional broadcaster Alan Partridge.
