Daniel Radcliffe's Mexican premiere for his new film, What If, has been shut down after fears for crowd control.

The Harry Potter star, who takes the lead in the romantic comedy alongside Zoe Kazan, attended a photocall in Mexico City but the red carpet event was cancelled due to crowd control concerns, said The Hollywood Reporter.

The film's Mexican distributor Diamond Films Mexico said the city's civil protection agency ordered it to suspend the event, which had been scheduled to take place in a shopping mall in the capital, after large throngs of fans turned up beforehand.

"We appreciate the response and enthusiasm for this event," Diamond Films said. "Sorry, but this decision is out of our control."

Daniel is set to attend the UK premiere of What If, directed by Michael Dowse, on August 12.
