Despite possessing two left feet Marc West has a great time getting down with the Oxford Lindy Hoppers

You might well ask exactly what Lindy Hop is – I know I did. Originating in 1920s New York, the African-American partner dance was introduced to Britain by US soldiers in the early 1940s and was an instant hit.

The grandfather of all jive dances is now worldwide – with everyone from Sweden to Singapore (and now Oxford) getting their swing on.

Oxford Lindy Hoppers were born in 2008 on a punt on the River Cherwell (of all places) and since then they’ve grown in numbers, stature and footwork speed to run regular dance events and lessons in and around the city.

As a complete beginner (with two left feet), you can imagine I was quite daunted by giving this a go, but instructors Helen Gavin and Alastair Graham soon got me on the floor and pulling some shapes (of sorts). To be honest, basic steps are surprisingly quick to grasp and with DJs spinning some seriously cool big band sounds, it’s almost impossible to not get into the groove.

Once the hall’s really a-hoppin’, you will feel the temperature rising and your heart skipping a beat – making it also the perfect weekly addition to your winter workout schedule. “If you want to get out of the house, get some exercise and have some serious fun with like-minded people, come dance with us”, says Helen. “We’re a non-profit, half-fat, full-fun group.”

So, has this made you wanna shake your tail feather too? If so, go learn this fun, fabulous and joyful dance with the bunch of friendly folks at Cowley Cotton Club. As you’ve read, no previous experience is necessary and you can always find a partner on the night – you might even meet the guy or doll of your dreams, who knows?

  • Drop-in classes are now running every Thursday evening (during term time) from 7.30pm upstairs at East Oxford Community Centre at 117 Cowley Road – and there’s often a cheeky trip to G&D’s Café afterwards for a rewarding ice cream and reflection on your acheivements.
