It was a star-studded night at the American Music Awards, with One Direction, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj taking home top prizes.

But it was the bits in-between the awards that really got us excited. These are the must-see moments.

1. J-Lo starts off strong.

Jennifer Lopez was the host of the action-packed awards and she started it off with a bang. Not satisfied with just her hosting duties, she kicked off the show performing a slowed-down version of her hit Waiting For Tonight before declaring: “Tonight is not about me, tonight is about the music and this year’s music made me want to dance.”

Dressed in a sequinned, tribal-print bodysuit, she then broke into a high energy dance routine to hits from Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Fetty Wap, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and Rihanna. It was exhausting just watching her absolutely kill it on stage.

2. Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth get hot and heavy.

Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth sing about getting it on in their duet Marvin Gaye and the pair did just that after they performed their hit on stage.

Charlie stood up from the piano after the song and the pair launched into a snog of epic proportions. We almost felt like we should look away to give them some privacy.

3. Pentatonix’s stunning Star Wars medley.

Harrison Ford took to the stage to introduce American a capella group Pentatonix, who treated Star Wars fans to a breath-taking version of the film’s score.

Accompanied by composer John Williams’s orchestra, the five vocalists dressed as characters from the George Lucas films for their performance, with classic scenes from the movies playing behind them.

4. Alanis is back!

Twenty years after Alanis Morissette’s album Jagged Little Pill spoke to teenage girls everywhere, she was back on stage to perform one of her biggest hits, You Oughta Know.

This time she was joined by pop star Demi Lovato for an epic, angsty singalong.

5. Hello, it’s the Muppets.

One of the best moments from the AMAs wasn’t even at the awards. Miss Piggy and Kermit spoofed Adele’s record-breaking video for her single Hello in an advert for their TV show The Muppets in a break during the ceremony.

The black and white video showed Piggy getting a mouthful of leaves as she stands outside in a winter coat in a recreation of the British singer’s smash hit.

6. Clueless reunion, whatever.

Alanis wasn’t the only person making us feel nostalgic at the AMAs. It’s also been 20 years since we first lusted after Cher Horowitz’s computerised wardrobe in Clueless and star Alicia Silverstone was reunited with Jeremy Sisto, who played sleazy Elton, on stage at the show.

Introducing an epic performance from Gwen Stefani of her single Used To Love You, the pair recalled that their movie featured a song called Just A Girl from an up-and-coming band called No Doubt.

7. The Weeknd is on fire.

It’s been a huge year for the Canadian singer and he topped it off by picking up two AMAs – but the real highlight of his night was his performance of his new single The Hills.

The dreadlocked rapper walked through blazing arches and poles for an electrifying performance and Meghan Trainor and Wiz Khalifa were both spotted rapping along in the audience.
