The BBC is apparently in talks to remake the classic sitcom Keeping Up Appearances – but this time it will focus on Hyacinth “Bouquet” Bucket’s teenage travails.
The 90s’ British sitcom centred on the life of snobbish social climber Hyacinth and her attempts to hide her working class roots.
The new series has a working title of Young Hyacinth, according to the Telegraph, and would take us back in time to Hyacinth’s younger years.
This follow’s yesterday’s news that 70s’ sitcom Porridge is also set for a return as part of a celebration of the corporation’s most popular “landmark” comedies, due to take place next year.
Other programmes apparently being considered include The Good Life, Are You Being Served? and Up Pompeii!
The remake of Keeping Up Appearances would follow the character as a 19-year-old and therefore would not star Patricia Routledge, 86, who originally played the ambitious Hyacinth Bucket – or “Bouquet”, as she insisted.
Show creator Roy Clarke is also on board, having apparently completed the script for a pilot episode of the new show.
The season of comedy classics would mark the 60th anniversary of the first broadcast of Hancock’s Half Hour.
A BBC spokesman told the Telegraph: “There are a number of shows being considered for BBC One’s Landmark Sitcom Season but nothing is confirmed as yet.”
