Oasis are to be the subject of a new film by the filmmaking team behind Amy.

Mat Whitecross’s documentary film will document the Britpop group’s early beginnings when Noel Gallagher first joined his brother Liam’s band in 1991, and chart their rise to fame when their first album, Definitely Maybe, became the fastest selling debut album in British history to date when it was released in 1994.

The movie, which will be produced by Amy director Asif Kapadia and James Gay Rees, will follow the warring siblings during the height of their fame as they landed eight UK Number One singles and eight UK Number One albums until their acrimonious split in 2009.

It will also feature Oasis’ two-night residency at Knebworth Park in 1996, to which they played to 125,000 fans per night, after 2.6 million people applied for tickets.

The brothers – who had hits with songs such as Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger and Roll With It – have since continued making music separately, with Liam using the moniker Beady Eye until the band broke up in 2014, while Noel went on to form his solo project in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

The filmmakers have been given unprecedented access from the band, giving a rare and candid insight into their world along with never-before-seen archive material.

Mat is no stranger to movies about rock stars, having made the Stone Roses’ film Spike Island and Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll, a biopic of punk pioneer Ian Dury.

Amy broke box office records on its release earlier this year, eventually becoming the highest-grossing British documentary of all time, with takings of £5.4 million.

The film did not receive the backing of Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, who has spoken openly about his feelings about the movie and has distanced himself from it.

The Oasis film will be released in UK cinemas in 2016.
