The BBC documentary The Man Behind The Goals gave us an insight into Wayne Rooney’s background, family life and footballing career.

The Gary Lineker interview reminded us of the time Rooney broke on to the football scene as a 16-year-old, and of just how much he’s achieved – even if he has made a few mistakes along the way.

Here’s what we were thinking…

1. Aw, he’s quite humble actually.

2. The fact that he didn’t really want to go to a trial at Liverpool age 11 – and went in his Everton kit instead – is pretty hilarious.

3. Woah, 16 is young to be a Premier League player.

4. The first goal he scored for Everton at that level, fresh off the bench, was pretty special (it also made him the league’s youngest ever goal scorer).

5. He was really just a 16-year-old who loved football, wasn’t he?

6. Okay, we admit it – the way Wayne wooed Coleen and asked her dad’s permission to take her on a date to the cinema is pretty cute.

7. But she definitely wears the trousers.

8. We’re so happy we now know that Rooney proposed at a petrol station before taking her home for his mum’s corned beef hash.

9. He used to write poems?! What!?

10. Oh yeah… he was the youngest England player ever to start in an international game.

11. But don’t remind us about Euro 2004.

12. Where’s Sven’s hair gone?

13. Was your sole reason behind moving to Manchester United from Everton actually Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney? Was it?

14. Man, Rooney used to be awesome.

15. But we’re still not over that Ronaldo incident during the World Cup in 2006.

16. Hold the phone! Did Ronaldo just hint he might go back to United?

17. Maybe Rooney shouldn’t be a pundit when he retires though.

18. We really want to hear Rooney singing Mustang Sally.

19. David Moyes has aged a lot in 10 months.

20. Love him or hate him, that record of the highest England goal scorer says something…
