Joe McElderry appeared on ITV’s Lorraine this week and was looking very different from the cheeky little chappy who won The X Factor in 2009.

The 24-year-old singer has filled out somewhat since winning the ITV singing talent show aged just 18.

Joe, who was on the morning chat show to talk about his role in Tommy The Rock Opera with Blue’s Antony Costa, won the first series of winter sports show The Jump last year, and has clearly kept hitting the gym since.

And he saw the funny side to online comments about his apparent weight gain.

Joe won The X Factor in 2009 mentored by fellow Geordie Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. His contract with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco expired in 2011 and wasn’t renewed, and he has since spoken of his unhappiness about his time with the label.

With the search for the next X Factor champion under way, we thought we’d take a look back at how the other 10 winners have changed.

Steve Brookstein

Steve, 46, won the very first series of Simon Cowell’s talent show back in 2004. The housewive’s favourite scored votes for his laid-back attitude and unpolished looks, so it’s no surprise his win didn’t change him much.

But it was Steve’s age and casual image that reportedly did not go down so well with Simon and he was dropped by Sony BMG just eight months into his contract. His feud with Simon has rumbled on, including in best-selling book Getting Over The Ex.

Shayne Ward

Shayne Ward won the second series in 2005 and he was eventually dropped by Syco in 2011.

He has continued to work in musical theatre and has just landed a starring role in Coronation Street, arriving on the cobbles this week as Michelle Connor’s cousin Aidan.

Shayne is looking a little more polished perhaps, but is still very much the simple lad that won over viewers 10 years ago.

Leona Lewis

When Leona entered the third series of The X Factor in 2006 she was a fresh-faced 21-year-old with a very big voice.

Tipped to become a huge star, she lived up to expectations with her first post-X Factor single, Bleeding Love, holding the number one spot for seven weeks, and also topping the charts around the world.

Leona has continued to have musical success, but parted ways with Syco last year due to a conflict of interests. Some may say she lacks “the X factor” as she does not live a glitzy showbiz life, but she certainly scrubs up well attending celebrity events.

Leon Jackson

Little Leon Jackson from Scotland was just 19 when he was crowned the winner of The X Factor in 2007.

But following in Leona’s footsteps was tough and when his debut album flopped, he was dropped by Syco less than a year later.

Leon has shaken it off and grown into a strapping young Scotsman, writing his own songs and is currently touring the US.

Alexandra Burke

Confident Alexandra Burke had a diva’s voice and a diva’s attitude right from the moment she entered the contest in 2008.

Since winning the show she has had a number of hits, toured with Beyonce and played Whitney Houston’s role in The Bodyguard musical adaptation in the West End.

Though she left Syco in 2011, and her next label RCA in 2013, she has signed a £3.5 million, five-album US deal with Epic records and continues to strut her stuff on the red carpet.

Matt Cardle

Essex lad Matt Cardle definitely played on being a “bit of rough” when he won the show in 2010, pipping One Direction and Rebecca Ferguson to the winning place.

And his don’t care attitude hasn’t changed as he demonstrated when he turned up to The X Factor musical I Can’t Sing with a black eye last year. Matt left Syco in 2012.

Little Mix

Just like the equally successful One Direction, Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirwall, Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock were put together at Boot Camp after auditioning as solo acts in 2011.

Little Mix not only won the show but have gone on to sell five million singles and 2.5 million albums worldwide, and earlier this week stole the show at the Teen Choice Awards.

The girls are certainly looking a lot more groomed these days, not to mention slimmer.

James Arthur

James Arthur won the show in 2012, and went on to cause controversy with his outspoken rants, eventually being dropped by Syco in 2014 over a conflict of interests.

But James continues to perform and is looking much more rock and roll than the lad who auditioned three years ago.

Sam Bailey

Prison guard and mother-of-three Sam didn’t look like she had the X factor when she rocked up to auditions in 2013 in baggy clothes and no make-up. But she soon wowed with her powerful voice and by the time the live shows had started she had been given a full glossy makeover.

But Sam – who parted ways with Syco earlier this year – is still just as down-to-earth as she always was.

Ben Haenow

Ben Haenow was the latest winner of the show last year and hasn’t had time to be dropped by Syco… yet.

In terms of his style, he’s tidied up a bit, trimming that beard and those eyebrows – and that quiff seems to have got even bigger.
