If talks work out, the 44-year-old actor would join the all-star line-up which already includes Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast/Prince, Luke Evans as villain Gaston and Josh Gad as Gaston’s sidekick Le Fou.

Sir Ian McKellen is tipped to play singing clock Cogsworth, while Emma Thompson may be cast as Mrs Potts. Kevin Kline will play Belle’s father and Audra McDonald will portray Garderobe.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn filmmaker Bill Condon will direct Beauty And The Beast, which is due to start production in May at Shepperton Studios in London.

Ewan, who appeared in crime caper Mortdecai alongside Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany, previously showed off his singing skills and his tenor voice in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge!

The star will next be seen in western Jane Got A Gun alongside Natalie Portman, and British spy movie Our Kind Of Traitor with Naomie Harris and Damian Lewis.
