Tonight’s Masterchef epsiode saw the latest five contestants battle it out for the approval of culinary wizards Gregg Wallace and John Torode. The winners are through to Friday night’s highly-anticipated quarter finals.

But which dishes had Twitter’s amateur food critics kicking up a fuss?

In the first round, 36-year-old Alex presented the judges with a patty butty, apparently Hull’s finest cuisine. However, whether Alex’s take on a patty butty matched up to the real thing was the subject of much debate on Twitter.

While others questioned whether the dish was really Masterchef material.

25-year-old Sarah served her Mexican dish with a “lagerita” – basically just a margarita with beer. Again, people were a little confused by the concept.

The three remaining chefs had just an hour and fifteen minutes to whip up a masterpiece with the ingredients on their calling card.

Chibesa made a rack of lamb with cream sauce, which wasn’t exactly the most aesthetically pleasing thing of all time.

…Which is probably why she got the boot.

In the next round, the remaining four chefs stepped up to the plate (get it?) to impress not only Gregg and John, but also former Masterchef champs Ping Coombes (2014), Natalie Coleman (2013), and Thomasina Miers from the very first series in 2005.

Alex offered up a Sunday lunch, much to everyone’s amusement.

Sadly, the small artsy portions we’re used to seeing on Masterchef didn’t really work so well on a roast dinner. Viewers were outraged by Alex’s modest portions.

Next up was Pete and his Asian-style chicken hearts and liver…

He won Ping’s heart with his “sexy” dish.

Sarah cooked up a bit of a sloppy looking pumpkin pamperoo. Or was it pan p’doo? Does anyone actually know what this dessert was?

Howard served up some dodgy looking wings with heads on. However, not all five judges had the same culinary experiences. While the former MasterChef winners dined out on somewhat raw-looking pink fish, Gregg and John’s dishes were perfectly cooked.

But then Howard made a faux-pas by undercooking his tart’s pastry. Oopsie.

Ultimately, Sarah and Pete were sent sailing into the quarter-final. So we get to see pretty Pete cook up another storm once again.
