As the X Factor finals weekend rolls around once again, we can’t wait to see who the traditional celebrity pairings for duets will be.

With this year’s performers including Ed Sheeran, Olly Murs, Meghan Trainor, Sam Smith, Demi Lovato, One Direction and Take That, lucky finalists Fleur East, Andrea Faustini and Ben Haenow can be sure of one of the most memorable moments of their lives when they take to the stage for their collaborations.

But before we see who gets matched up with whom, let’s take a look back at some of our favourite famous duets from past series finals.

Leona Lewis and Take That

Man band Take That had the honour of taking on the celebrity duets for the first year they took place in series three, and also of singing with one of the show’s most successful winners, Leona Lewis. They crooned together over the band’s classic A Million Love Songs and saw Leona safely through to the top spot.

Westlife find their niche

Until they split in 2012, Westlife were barely away from The X Factor thanks to their manager Louis Walsh – and of course Simon Cowell, who first signed them. Their debut duet was with series three runner-up Ray Quinn where they sang That’s Life, they were back again to belt out Flying Without Wings alongside JLS in series five, and they have countless special guest appearances under their belts. In fact, even after the split, Shane Filan was back again last year for a repeat rendition of Flying Without Wings with schoolboy finalist Nicholas McDonald.

Alexandra Burke and Beyonce

In possibly the most memorable X Factor duet ever, eventual series five winner Alexandra was joined on stage by her idol Beyonce. The lucky finalist seemed like she just couldn’t believe her luck when she announced Queen Bey’s entrance to help her sing Listen from Dreamgirls, the song that had powered her through many a key moment on the show. Calling in a favour from Beyonce had to go some way to ensuring Alexandra was the victor that year.

Joe McElderry and George Michael

Nice guy winner Joe scored the biggest duet of his career when superstar George Michael sang Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me in the final. It must have been a huge moment for Joe, whose family had provided footage of a younger version of him reenacting the music video to Wham!’s Last Christmas in a previous week’s show for host Dermot O’Leary to taunt him with.

The X Factor’s old pal Robbie Williams

Another famous face who’ll never be turned away from the stage door of The X Factor is Robbie, who is on hand most years to give a rendition of his latest song and offer a pep talk to contestants. Of course, he’s pulled his weight in the duet stakes, too – Robbie has partnered series six’s Olly Murs in his classic Angels, and was an early supporter of The X Factor’s biggest export One Direction when he joined them for She’s The One.

Matt Cardle and Rihanna

Rihanna also falls into the “Friends of The X Factor” category, and supplemented her usual guest performances with a duet with series seven winner Matt Cardle. The pair brought a bit of edge to the regular power ballad performance spot with Unfaithful, but of course it was second runners up One Direction who went on to be the big stars of that year.
