Downton Abbey’s US fans could be in for a treat.

The show’s executive producer says he hasn’t ruled out having an episode or two of the series, which stars Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery and Dame Maggie Smith, set in New York.

US broadcaster PBS hosted a Q&A with Gareth Neame and some of the cast members in the Big Apple, where a portion of the season five premiere was screened.

An audience member noted that the Crawleys — the fictional aristocratic family that the show is centred around — have relatives in New York.

When asked whether Downton Abbey would ever go there on location, Gareth said that it was a great idea, but would cost roughly $10 million (£6 million).

Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti play the family’s American relatives who have made cameos in the series.
