INDIE-ROCK band Primal Scream, dance act Soul II Soul, rappers Public Enemy and singer-songwriter Gaz Coombes are among the big names heading to Oxford’s South Park for a new music extravaganza.

Other names on the bill for the Common People festival, planned for next year’s Spring Bank Holiday weekend, May 28 and 29, include Chas & Dave, singer-songwriter Jamie Lawson, Kurupt FM, The Cuban Brothers, Mr Motivator and Oxford City Singers, on the Saturday, and Craig David, Ghost Poet, The Sugarhill Gang, Don Brocco, and West End Kids on the Sunday.

Also present will be East Oxford DJ Aidan Larkin’s popular Disco Shed, and veteran Kidlington reggae DJ David Rodigan.

Saturday’s headliner has not yet been revealed.

A local music stage will be presented by Oxford music monthly, Nightshift.

The event is expected to bring 25,000 people a day to the park, which has not been used for a proper rock event since Radiohead’s homecoming show in 2001.

Former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes, who lives in Wheatley, supported Radiohead in the park in 2001.

He said: “I am really excited to be playing at the first Common People festival next May. It’s great that it’s happening in my hometown too, which means I can crawl home afterwards.”

Common People is being organised by the team behind the Isle of Wight’s award-winning Bestival. An inaugural event was held in Southampton earlier this year.

As well as music, there will be street food, a cocktail bar, knitting tent, circus, community street band, arts and crafts and a kids area.

Craig David will be presenting his TS5 house party show, with special guests.

He said: “Having the ability to play whatever feels right on the day and feed off the energy of the crowd is what makes TS5 so fresh and exciting to me. I can’t wait to set it off in Oxford. It will be lit!”

Festival curator Rob da Bank said: “Common People was one of my funnest weekends of festivalling in 2015, and believe me there was some competition.
