Oxford University’s Said Business School has played host to any number of illustrious visitors – from high-flying industrialists to visiting statesmen and economists. But this Saturday it will welcome a rather different group of movers and shakers.

From 4pm the building, in Frideswide Square, opens up its rooftop amphitheatre for an evening of music designed to have crowds rocking into the night.

Called The Kids Are Alright – after the hit by The Who - it raises money for young people’s charities All As One UK and Children’s Ambulatory Care at the Radcliffe Hospitals.

Music comes from Oxford country-rock act The Dreaming Spires; the Ran Kan Kan Cuban brass band; indie-pop rising stars Balloon Ascents; Rutland singer-songwriter Paul McClure; pub-rockers The Shapes; Mike Gale’s sublime Americana act Co-Pilgrim; harmonic husband and wife duo Black Feathers; folky Fairport Convention collaborators The Fifteen String Trio; and classic rock-pop outfit Lone Tree Quartet.

The event, now in its third year, is co-organised by Tony Kelly of The Shapes. He said: “I’m really pleased with this year’s line-up, which is an eclectic mash-up of acts. It’s a great event in a lovely setting which raises money for two very good causes. It’s great that people want to play it.”

He added: “It promises to be a great night of mostly local music, but the venue is the real star of the show. It’s like an Italian amphitheatre but is right in the centre of Oxford, with easy access from the bus and railway stations. It’s a fantastic place to play – and looks especially lovely as the sun sets. You won’t believe you’re in Oxford.”

Tickets are £10 from the Truck Store in Cowley Road or from wegottickets.com or £12 on the door. The fun goes on until 11.30pm.

There’s a good bar with cheap drinks and very reasonably-priced hot food and barbecue.
