OXFORD reggae legend David Rodigan, and Mumford & Sons have been announced as surprise additions to this year’s Reading Festival.

Dancehall DJ Rodigan, and the chart-topping folk-pop giants join a bill which organisers have described as the most diverse yet.

The new additions join an eclectic line-up alongside previously announced headliner, the US heavy metal band Metallica.

Rodgigan, a former Gosford Hill, Kidlington, pupil who was awarded an MBE in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting, will join dance acts Chase & Status, Rage and Shy FX as part of supergroup Rebel Sound, playing reggae, jungle and drum & bass.

Other fresh additions to the bill, for the weekend of August 28-30, include Royal Blood, Bastille, Deadmau5, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Years & Years, Wolf Alice, Pretty Vicious, Jack Garratt and Hannah Wants.

Reading Festival, which takes place on the River Thames, just over the county boundary, attracts thousands of Oxfordshire revellers for three days of often raucous live music.

Mumford & Sons are the biggest name to be unveiled. The Londoners, who began their career with a show at Oxford’s Bullingdon Arms, last played Reading, and its sister festival in Leeds, in 2010, and, three years later, went on to headline the closing night at Glastonbury Festival.

Festival boss Melvin Benn said: “I’m delighted to have secured Mumford & Sons for Main Stage headliners this summer and can’t wait to see them return to the festivals for their first UK performance in over two years. With today’s announcement of a further eight great acts joining the bill, the Reading & Leeds line-up is already shaping up to be one of the best ever and I’m looking forward to revealing the third headliner and even more great artists soon.”

In a joint statement, Chase & Status said: “The last time we played Reading & Leeds, the crowd were insane and we had to stop the set four times – there was so much energy. This year, we’re coming back as Rebel Sound, Culture Clash Champions 2014 – ourselves David Rodigan, Rage and Shy FX. We’ve only performed together once and it’s safe to say that night was incredible. We’re already preparing the new dubs, and can’t wait to see what the Reading & Leeds crowd will bring this summer.”
