SHOWBIZ REVIEW: Legally Blonde
5:00pm Thursday 19th July 2012 in The Guide
TRUST me, everything they say about this show is true.
It IS pink. It IS shiny, and it IS gloriously light-hearted.
I’ll put my hand up... I actually set out wanting to be more critical, but having been there, I couldn’t be.
My initial scepticism was solely because of the 2001 film, starring Reese Witherspoon, on which this musical is based.
In it, the heart-broken Elle Woods, sorority homecoming queen and fashion design graduate of UCLA, Malibu, goes to Harvard Law School to win back her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III.
Naturally, it only takes her a couple of tests and a bit of academic-themed cheerleading to get in.
Really? Is it that easy? (and if it were, I’d have donned a rah-rah skirt long ago...).
But in Legally Blonde – The Musical, this implausibility is acknowledged – saluted even – to create a source of clever comedy throughout the show. And boy, do the stars deliver . . .
Faye Brookes is truly wonderful as Elle. She nails the accent to within an inch of it’s life and stays ditzily in character throughout, both as the bubble-headed Delta Nu Elle and significantly-more-serious Harvard Law Elle.
Equally, Gareth Gates as Warner is just as we would expect, delivering ‘Serious’ with a finely-tuned arrogance coated in glitter and hair gel.
In fact, just the Warner I’d imagined, though Gareth still manages to remain charming.
However, as good as Faye and Gareth are, the best thing about the show for me was Rhona McGregor.
She plays Paulette Bounufonte, the part Irish, part Italian hairdresser with an unorthodox dress sense.
What she brings to the show is pure, unadulterated joy. And her knight in shining armour, the UPS delivery man Kyle (Lewis Griffiths) will leave you either: a) If you’re a woman – drooling with lust b) If you’re a man – wallowing in envy I can’t recommend this show highly enough. It’s funny and as a rom-com-singalong, gets even the guys on their feet. Perfect.
Legally Blonde – The Musical at the New Theatre, George Street, Oxford. It runs tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at 7.30pm, with a 2.30pm matinee today and on Saturday. For tickets call 0844 871 3020
