Starting Up with The Three Pigeons @ Milton Common

The Three Pigeons at Milton Common on the old London to Oxford turnpike near Thame has been serving beer to thirsty travellers for well over 200 years.

For many years a Hall’s house, it is now owned by LASSCO, the quirky salvage to restaurant operation noted for the historic Brunswick House at Vauxhall and the ‘uber cool’ Ropewalk Market in Bermondsey in London.

Two outstanding young chefs and real ale fans, Edward Madden and James Ngu, run the Oxfordshire hostelry with a flair and enthusiasm that has won them a loyal following.

Like all great hosts Edward loves to share his passion and is delighted to announce the First Three Pigeons Beer Festival taking place at the pub from today until Sunday. In the unique setting of the well-furnished coaching inn with its cosy log fires and its long and fascinating history, Edward, James and general manager Dan Hartwell will be offering ales from these breweries: Malt the Brewery, Leighton Buzzard, North Cotswold, Andwells, Ramsbury and Loddon.

There will also be live music from Hair Of The Dog on Saturday from 9pm.

The Three Pigeons has hosted highwaymen (John Price was hanged in a gibbet here in 1785 – 20,000 came to watch) and royalty in the person of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) who attended the hunt here in 1866 before lunching at Shirburn with the Macclesfields – the Prince would undoubtedly have preferred Edward and James’s fare.

One of only two pubs in Oxfordshire to enjoy an ‘exotic dancing’ (pole dancing) licence Edward regrets that this feature will not be available – however, a warm and convivial welcome, fine food and a selection of the tastiest ales local brewers can provide will certainly appeal to the beer cognoscenti – at this the First Three Pigeons Beer Festival.
