Where to go for breakfast on the first day of summer? The Crisis Skylight Cafe of course, part of the Old Fire Station, to see if its legendary breakfasts lived up to its reputation.

Situated in George Street in central Oxford, it's an accessible, benevolent and economic way to eat brunch, as well as tasting might fine.

Skylight was quiet when we got there, stuck between the commuters rush and lunchtime, but this was by no means a disadvantage, as we were thinking tactically - less competition meant faster food.

The menu was good, our biggest decision whether to go for the traditional full English style tucker like the Famous Fireman's Breakfast or something more adventurous like the home-made granola yoghurt.

I went for adventurous, ordering the sweet potato hash with guacamole, grilled tomato and a bed of rocket (£4.50) and I was very impressed with the meal, the sweetness of the potato contrasting nicely with the bitterness of the rocket and the juiciness of the tomatoes. I'd even go so far as to say the guacamole was as good as the one I make at home!

My friend had the bacon and maple syrup pancakes and also enjoyed his breakfast, with light and fluffy pancakes - the age old friendship between maple syrup and bacon as good as ever.

Not only was this breakfast a big hit but was made you feel better with each mouthful because of the great work Crisis Skylight do with the homeless. All profits from the cafe go to helping get the homeless off the streets and into the catering industry so they can get their lives back on track. You can meet many of the success stories right there behind the counter.

All the more reason to have breakfast there, as if you needed another one.
