Huffkins had been recommended by a friend, and I always enjoy a trip to Witney where there is plenty of free parking and a great selection of shops.

Huffkins is on the town’s high street. We arrived at 1pm on a Tuesday, to find the cafe heaving with people enjoying lunch and there was a wonderful buzz.

We waited about 10 minutes for a table, and enjoyed the pretty decor of duck egg blue Lloyd-loom chairs and pink tables.

Luckily the Afternoon Tea is served all day, so we were in luck. I was there with my daughter and her little friend so we decided to share a traditional afternoon tea with the addition of chips, milkshake and lemonade.

The really good thing about Huffkins is you can select your sandwich fillings from the menu. We chose ham, cheese and pickle – which was delicious – and an egg mayo on white bread, with the crusts chopped off. It was very buttery and moist.

A third one, smoked salmon and cream cheese, was a bit light on filling but was, nevertheless, really tasty.

For cakes the girls selected one each. One chose a triple-chocolate cake, which looked nice but was disappointingly dry, while the other had a chocolate brownie, which was also disappointing. However, there was a very nice selection of other cakes: lemon tart, carrot cake, chocolate eclair, coffee eclair, Bakewell tart and flapjack, plus the two chocolate ones.

We also had a choice of scones – fruit, plain and cheese.

We chose one fruit and one plain, and they were both warm and incredibly moreish. The clotted cream and jam were equally delicious.

There is a wonderful selection of teas, which are served in little stainless steel tea pots with housing for loose tea; these poured well without drips and didn’t burn the fingers. There was also a jug of boiling water for top-ups.

I’m really glad we went to Huffkins and will definitely go again – maybe for lunch next time. Service was super friendly and efficient and the staff looked after us well. There is also a bakery with a selection of goodies for sale.
