Starting Up with Joseph Perks & Co

When we opened the bar back in August in St Clements we had a simple concept that revolved around immaculately crafted cocktails and fine artisanal espresso based coffee.

Knowing full well that thirsty people are also often hungry people, we struck up a relationship with Big Apple Hot Dogs of Shoreditch and the puzzle was complete. Or so we thought.

Since its conception, Joe Perks hot dogs have been growing in popularity. The majority of reviews we receive talk about them with sheer adoration and we’ve worked hard to make sure our product remains consistently top notch every single time you visit. So it was only a matter of time before we decided to up the anti!

But where could we go to next? The simple answer would be to stick a few burgers on the menu. But that wouldn’t sit well with our desire to produce something you won’t find anywhere else in Oxford. We wanted to aim higher, but we didn’t quite know exactly which direction that would take us in. Then we met Josh Vine, the man who would go on to be our new head chef.

Josh is an experienced chef with a background in home smoking his signature dishes. After an intense few weeks of meetings and discussions about concept, technique and brainstorming where to get the best locally sourced fresh produce, we settled on the idea to become Oxford’s first ever and very own smokehouse. And thus Joe’s Smokery was born.

Everything we serve at Joe’s Smokery is smoked onsite often taking up to 12 hours to get just right. We use the finest whisky oak bringing a sweetness to everything we smoke, be it our pulled pork shoulder, our tender beef brisket or even our fresh salad range (coming very soon). The sauces we use are homemade and we serve our dishes with a homemade pickle selection.

We’ve been running the concept for several months now and, while the menu is still in its infancy, the feedback we’ve received so far has been exceptional! Our weekly specials mean that you’ll never get bored of what we have to offer and yes, there’s even a small range of vegetarian friendly smoked delights!

But that’s not all! Seeing as cocktails are what we’re best at when it comes to evenings in the bar, we’ve started working on a cocktail pairing menu to compliment our smokey offerings.

Why not try a Tommy Got Smoked margarita with reposado tequila, organic agave nectar, lime juice and hickory infused liquid smoke? You’d be crazy not to!
