I have been several times to Daylesford in Kingham so I know it’s good and was keen to revisit.

We arrived early and had time to mooch around the gorgeous organic food shop, nibbling away on the numerous samples of cakes and cheeses before buying some dark sourdough bread, crumpet load, seed loaf as well as double-chocolate cookies and chocolate brownies to take home.

We also purchased some Chateau Leoube rose wine and extra virgin olive oil that is produced at the owners’ vineyard in Provence.

Then we ventured into the restaurant called The Trough for afternoon tea.

It has a lovely big dining room with an open kitchen at the far end with some fabulous lighting, rustic decorations, tables filled with diners and views over the gravelled courtyards.

Tea was a surprisingly simple affair, a choice of tea with freshly baked fruit scones, clotted cream and really tasty strawberry jam.

Sandwiches were not on the menu but we were offered a sharing plate of three choices of salad instead which was a bit odd, although when they arrived they were very tasty.

For my tea I chose fresh ginger, lemon and honey and my friend had Earl Grey. There was also a great selection of cakes on the menu, most of which we had tried in the shop.

Daylesford had a wonderful relaxed feel about it. It is a beautiful place to visit and everything is of the high standard we have come to expect from owner Lady Bamford.

It may be long way to go for a cup of tea and a scone but it’s closer than you think and has a lot to offer.

Afternoon tea scone £3.50; tea £2.50; selection of cakes £2-4; salads £10 for three.
