I had a meeting in Oxford so it was an ideal chance to pop into Paul, the new patisserie in High Street.

This very warm and welcoming cafe had more seating than I thought, every table and chair filled with people devouring delicious looking fare – bowls of soup, rustic sandwiches and hot drinks.

There was lots of chatting, wifi using, the usual cafe buzz.

I was short on time so had to opt for a takeaway. It was very hard to choose from the wonderful selections of salads, sandwiches and cakes.

Not nearly as hard as waiting until I got home to eat them.

I didn’t wait, I couldn’t resist having a little bite of my Mille Feuille, which was worth the mess; crumbs everywhere, sticky fingers, custard around my mouth, what a piglet! But oh, that crispy custardy bite.

Once home I placed everything on a board and cut the sandwiches into thirds: the salami and gherkin sandwich on cheese bread and the more traditional Emmental and ham baguette – lovely French cheese, chewy bread, zingy vinaigrette, spicy salami, tasty ham.

The patiserrie had an array of perfect tartes and giant macaroons, so pretty but I had chosen a raspberry croissant instead because I had never had one before.

It was to die for; crispy on the outside, tangy raspberry and custardy softness on the inside.

So now I’m just biding my time, waiting for any excuse to get back into Oxford and try some more of Paul’s goodies. This place could be addictive!
