Eight years ago, Oxford University biochemistry graduate Kirsty Westaway and her cattle farming husband Phil, took over the tenancy of a rambling beef farm in the wilds of Gloucestershire.

Starting off, according to Paul, “with a wheelbarrow, an overdraft, and eight cows,” they have expanded the farm from 103 to 170 acres and now keep more than 200 head of cattle – along with the wheelbarrow and the overdraft.

As well as being full of missionary zeal over the quality of their Aberdeen Angus beef, the pair are also passionate about wine, and the magic which occurs when the two are matched. So it was natural that they should eventually hit on a great idea for the ultimate takeaway.

Called Paul & Kirsty’s Perfect Night In, it features a big old box with two grass-fed Aberdeen Angus steaks (you choose the cut according to how much you’re willing to pay), along with Cotswold Gold extra virgin rapeseed oil for frying and tubs of sea salt and pepper. Oh, and a very good, perfectly-matched bottle of red or white artisan wine.

The sets, ordered online for a specified date) are designed as gift boxes, or Christmas presents, for foodie friends or, in my case, as a carnivorous treat to myself.

The kit comes with cooking instructions, though you don’t need to be Raymond Blanc to flash a steak in a glug of oil.

The meat – I chose the fillet (ribeye and sirloin are also available, all ridiculously well packaged in ice packs to keep them cool) – was of the deepest, darkest maroon and beyond tender, melting in the mouth.

The kit doesn’t contain any sauces or accompaniments – other than wine (which ought to be enough, you may argue), so you’ll need to get busy with some spuds and veg in advance. If you were feeling particularly lazy, I suppose you could even pop to a takeaway for chips. I chose rice, though, and knocked up a quick mustard and cream sauce. Served with a divine bottle of Domaine de l’Evêché Pinot Noir, and an episode of Doctor Who, it made for a luxurious and memorable, evening in. And if you, like me, decide to go it alone, you can treat yourself to the same thing the next night. Heaven!

Gift Boxes cost from £36.99-£39.99, or you can economise by ordering steaks only for £19.99 for two.

Connoisseur Gift boxes including a wine accessory pack (bottle opener, wine ring, stopper and foil cutter) and Luxury Gift Boxes (containing wine accessories and steak knives) are also available from £59.99 and £79.99 respectively. All you need to provide is minimal expertise... and the plate!
