Brunch at Greens Cafe, Oxford

In an ideal brunching world we would all have time to laze and graze, but sometimes a quick bite is all the fuel we need, so I chose to try Greens Cafe, next door to The Eagle and Child pub in St Giles’.

Although its shop front is small, it’s deceptively spacious with seating upstairs and downstairs for anyone who wishes to sit and eat.

I have to admit that having eaten a full English breakfast here previously, served with warm new potatoes, I was hoping for better. So, with an open mind and an empty stomach, I ventured forth. I perused the chalkboard menus above the counter and noted the offering of a breakfast baguette or full English (with no potatoes), both reasonably priced at £2.95 and £5.75 respectively.

And yet I was instead drawn towards the smoked salmon bagel priced at £3.80 served with salad and coleslaw.

Smoked salmon always makes me feel as if I’m treating myself, and this time was no different with a generous portion of it and not too much cream cheese.

I also chose a can of Lemon San Pellegrino, and at £1.30 felt this was also decent value.

Simply put, Greens is a solid venue. Its no-frills approach to eating, combined with good value for money, makes it a great place to grab a bite on the way in or out of town.
