* Weston on the Green has a whole new pub to brag about, The Black Sheep, formerly The Ben Jonson, which the village can now add to its present tally of the wonderful Milkshed, fine dining Weston Manor, and local favourite The Chequers, making it a culinary destination if there ever was one.

The Black Sheep was taken over by Weston Manor in July to ensure that any guests staying for several nights had an alternative to its restaurant.

The Black Sheep is currently enjoying a refurbishment and due to open its doors again on Monday under the watchful eye of new manager Mark Godfrey.

Weston Manor’s head chef Larry Jayasekara is overseeing the menu, and while the bar snacks remain you can also enjoy proper pub grub such as chicken and leek pie or ham, egg and chips, with a focus on seasonal, organic produce. See blacksheepweston.co.uk or call 01869 351153.

* Atomic Pizza has been in the news after its iconic Cowley Road statue ‘the Silver Surfer’, pictured, was stolen from above the door of it’s Cowley Road premises over the weekend.

Owner Martin Bunce, who originally drove all the way to Scotland to buy the cult comic figure, is devastated and spent the weekend trawling nearby gardens hoping to find it.

Vandals left the surfboard behind, ripping the figure off the top, shedding a few silver fingers in the meantime which were found on the pavement the next day. Martin is now worried the figure has been damaged beyond repair. However, he is still begging anyone who knows where the Silver Surfer is to return it to its rightful owners. “It’s irreplaceable,” Martin said, “so we appeal to whoever took it to bring it back.” On a more positive note, the Atomic Burger/Pizza franchise is now looking to open in Reading next, the Bristol branch having been such a success.
