I had heard about the legendary Jane’s Teas in Kirtlington but had never been, mainly because of its erratic opening times and odd location.

But having checked the website, I finally made it there a few Sundays ago, when the sun was shining and the kids were peckish.

We left the car at the quarry entrance and walked along the bumpy track for about half a mile, although you can drive all the way down. You can’t miss the cafe entrance thanks to the pretty bunting in the bushes.

When we arrived at 4.30pm there was already a queue of about 20 minutes, so the kids ran off to get tables in the sunshine, while we managed to order the last Full Jeeves: tomato and vegetable soup with a savoury red and green pepper and Parmesan scone, sandwiches served in a pretty three-tier stand, 10 homemade cakes to choose from, plain scones with jam and cream, and tea for two in silver pots with vintage cups and saucers.

The sandwiches were generously filled and delicious and the cakes all baked by Jane. We chose rhubarb crumble cake, sharp rhubarb on an almond sponge, lemon gateau, which was tangy but a bit dry, lemon drizzle, no complaints there, good carrot cake, moist and tasty, and lovely scones.

It is a truly one-off place; bohemian, quirky, with higgledy-piggledy tables laid with embroidered cloths, gazebos, Parker Knoll armchairs, a canal-side view, an old swing seat on the decking, vintage bits-and-pieces in every nook and cranny, as well as birds in cages, bunting and fairy lights. It’s also a great for children and well behaved dogs.
