Wantage was first officially recognised as an important town in 1216, when Henry III granted weekly trading rights. But its history goes back further, as it was the birthplace of King Alfred (849-899 AD). His marble statue, by Count Gleichen nephew of Queen Victoria, stands in the market place.
These days there is a thriving local business network and an equally thriving performing arts scene, including amateur dramatics, folk singing, choral singing, barbershop harmony singing, dance in a 17th-century style and the inevitable Morris dancing.
There are also plenty of orchestral groups to join if you play an instrument.
But what keeps the town so lively is its continuing expansion and ability to adapt. It was the Wilts and Berks canal and tramway links which gave Wantage a trade advantage in the 19th century; now its good transport systems and proximity to Oxford, Abingdon and Didcot help keep it outward-looking.
Wantage has a summer festival, which is a celebration of local talent. A wide range of arts are showcased, including music, drama, photography, crafts and dancing.
Near the time of the festival, you should be able to pick up information about it from many points, including the information centre.

Ardington House: Surrounded by well-kept lawns, terraced gardens, peaceful paddocks and parkland, this Baroque house was built in 1720. You will find it on the edge of the village of Ardington. Built by the Strong brothers with typical Georgian symmetry, the house is also famous for its imperial staircase. Leading from the hall, the staircase has two matching flights leading into one and is considered by experts to be one of the finest examples in Britain.
