CINEMA

There are two multi-screen Odeon cinemas in Oxford, one in George Street and one in Magdalen Street. A 24-hour telephone line covers programme information and ticket booking for both cinemas.

Vue Multiplex Cinema is on Grenoble Road, opposite the Kassam football stadium. It shows mainly new films and also some Bollywood movies.

The Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP) is on Jeune Street, off Cowley Road. It has cult status in Oxford, partly because it shows a wide range of art films, cult classics and mainstream cinema, but also because it is endearingly non-commercial. There is no plush and no popcorn, the tickets are ripped out of a book of raffle tickets and the seats aren’t tiered. The UPP usually shows new releases a few weeks after they appear in other cinemas.

New Theatre, George Street, Oxford Formerly the Apollo, The New Theatre has become even better since it reverted to its original name. There is now a bigger choice of shows, and facilities for disabled patrons have improved greatly. Types of show include ballet, comedy, musicals, opera and stage plays. The New Theatre also continues to be a magnet for big names.

Oxford Playhouse, Beaumont Street, Oxford Oxford Playhouse and its Burton Taylor Studio present and produce a wide range of live performances. The programme includes the best of British and international drama, family shows, contemporary dance and music, student and amateur shows, comedy, lectures and poetry. It also produces and tours its own shows, hosts artists in residence and presents Playhouse Plays out, an ongoing series of off-site events which take place at various locations across the county.

Burton Taylor Theatre, Oxford The Burton Taylor is owned by Oxford University and during term-time it is the venue for many student productions. Outside term-time, the Burton Taylor is open to both local and touring companies. Productions tend to be on a small scale to reflect the intimacy of the 50-seater venue.

The Old Fire Station Theatre, George Street, Oxford The Old Fire Station Studio Theatre (OFS) is an intimate 169-seater theatre which hosts a variety of shows from comedians such as Peter Kay and Jenny Éclair to musicians such as Ola Onabule. The theatre also features the best of the student talent and gives local young people the chance to tread the boards. It is the sister theatre of the New Theatre, is owned by Live Nation and supported by the Cameron Mackintosh Foundation.

Pegasus Theatre, Magdalen Road, Oxford Pegasus Theatre is a welcoming vibrant venue, that hosts a range of professional dance, music and drama productions from local to international companies alongside a programme of youth and community arts projects for six year-olds upwards. Oxford Youth Theatre was founded here in 1962 and continues to flourish, with projects in music theatre, drama, dance and physical theatre plus technical theatre and stage design. The venue has been closed for a major redevelopment, but hopes to reopen in September this year. This will create a new complex (with café bar, dance studio/rehearsal rooms, refurbished theatre, offices and technical workshop).
There is a special Pegasus in the Park event at Florence Park, East Oxford, on June 3 from 10am to 4pm — a day of free activities for families, adults and children — when you will also be able to find out about plans for Pegasus following the reopening.
