ABINGDON schoolchildren have unveiled a revamped gym, created with £20,000 they won for designing it.

Fitzharrys School opened the fitness suite with the help of Oxford United football stars on Thursday.

The facility has been redecorated and equipped with rowing machines, spin bikes, treadmills, cross trainers, weights, exercise balls and a multi-gym.

A team of pupils, helped by teachers in the science and PE departments, drew up the design to win a contest run by oil company BP, which was looking for projects which linked sport and education in schools.

Mary Stonell, 15, a design team member, said: “It’s amazing to see ideas we had on paper in reality.”

Emma Birch, 15, added: “I’m so happy that we raised money for it. I can’t wait to use it.”

Headteacher Jonathan Dennett said: “It shows the creativity and vision of the students that they were successful in winning this grant.”
