She was made to wait more than six decades, but today 84-year-old Jessie Brown from Oxford was finally rewarded for her efforts as a Land Girl with a special ceremony with Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Downing Street.

Mrs Brown, who worked on a farm in Shotswell, near Banbury, for several years during the Second World War, was one of 50 former members of the Women's Land Army to be invited to London to receive a commemorative badge of honour.

Mrs Brown, from North Oxford - who admitted to suffering from nerves ahead of the trip - said: "It's a lovely way to say thank-you. It never occurred to me that I did anything wonderful - it was just nice to work in the fields."
