Young people from Oxford are being offered the chance to drive on a circuit at Silverstone as part of a road safety campaign launched by Amey, of Oxford Science Park.
Amey has launched Drive for Safety – a campaign to help reduce the number of young people killed or critically injured in road accidents in the UK.
The company is inviting 80 drivers, aged 18-25, to visit Silverstone and learn practical driving techniques that will help keep them safe in the event of an accident.
These include training in a skid pan car – which replicates the conditions drivers experience when they lose control due to ice or aquaplaning, with tuition on how to respond. There will also be a session on braking distances and a driving exercise on the Silverstone track. All instructors are approved driving instructors and will assess young drivers and offer feedback.
The event will also include a hands-on road safety workshop, where young people will be asked for their ideas on how to reduce road accidents.
Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey said: “Amey manages and maintains much of the UK’s road network. As such, road safety is a real priority for us.
“At present, road traffic accidents are biggest cause of death of young people worldwide.* We are launching Drive for Safety to help reverse this trend.”
There will be two Drive for Safety sessions on July 27. The morning session run from 8am – 2pm and the afternoon session takes place from 2-6pm.
Participants must be aged 18-25, have a full UK driving licence and be able to make their own travel arrangements.
