TWENTY new jobs will be created when a bakery chain opens a shop in Oxford next month.

French patisserie firm Paul has 30 sites in greater London but this will be its first outside the capital.

The unit, in what was the Coast boutique at 138 High Street, will sell bread, croissants, sandwiches, pastries, cakes and coffee from December 8.

The firm is recruiting full and part-time shop assistants, production assistants, supervisors and bakers/patisserie chefs.

Paul chief executive Jean-Michel Orieux said: “It is very exciting to step outside London for the first time and Oxford was high on our list as somewhere we would like to be.

“It has heritage, the local economy is good, there is a strong local community and it’s a well-visited city.

“It’s also within commuting reach of London, so we are not completely unknown to many people in Oxford.”

Mr Orieux said there were plans for the company, which has 550 shops worldwide, to open a second outlet in Oxford in the near future.

Wages for shop assistants range from £6.60 to £8.30 an hour, while the going rate for supervisors is £8.90 to £9.90. Mr Orieux added: “We have a flexible approach, in that many of our staff are students who fit hours around studying, or mums who need to leave by a certain time to pick up their children from school.

“We don’t do zero-hour contracts. We believe people need to know what hours they are working.

“We are looking for personality before anything else, because we’ll train people on the technical aspects but it’s more important they are good with customers.”
