A MUM felt she was “failing” as a parent after her daughter fell into abuse at the hands of a child sex gang, the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

The mother of the unnamed witness, known as Girl 1, gave evidence at the trial of nine men accused of running a child sex ring in Oxford.

Girl 1 says she was raped and sold for sex by Kamar Jamil, and brothers Akhtar and Anjum Dogar from the age of 12 in 2004 to when she was 15 in 2007.

Her mum broke down as she told the jury her daughter changed from a “friendly”and “wonderful” student to someone who was “angry” and “sneaky”.

The jury heard extracts from a diary she kept.

The woman said her daughter would come home late, “dirty”, “dishevelled”, and covered in cigarette burns.

She said: “She said she hated everything. She didn’t know why she was alive and she may as well be dead.

“Which was extremely hurtful to hear from your daughter."

She said her daughter was not eating at home and she lost an “awful” lot of weight, adding : “Her bones were sticking out.”

She told the court: "There was just nothing much left to her. Apart from aggression if we tried to question her about anything, there was no emotion left in her whatsoever.

“She didn’t laugh, she didn’t cry. It sounds awful but I was desperate for her to start crying and let go. But she couldn’t cry.

“I just wanted to help her but I couldn’t. She just seemed like a lost soul.”

And she told the court she found her daughter had cut herself with razor blades. She said: “I was afraid for her and I wanted my little girl to be okay.

“She just said ‘it takes all the pain away mum’."

Her daughter also had nightmares and would scream in her sleep, she said.

In 2005, Girl 1 asked her parents to take her to social services.

Her mum said: “I felt at that point I was becoming a failing mother to my child.”

Doctors diagnosed the girl with severe post traumatic stress and drug induced psychosis, the court heard.

DC Jane Crump, who was the county’s missing persons coordinator, also gave evidence.

Prosecutor Neil Moore, reading her notes from March 2007, said Girl 1 had told the officer she felt she had been “groomed” by Akhtar Dogar and he was selling sex with her to friends for £50.

Reading the note, he said: “Some of the males involved were from the taxi driving fraternity in Oxford.”

She also said the men paid “females” to go to Pakistan to take part in arranged marriages and smuggle drugs back.

DC Crump said: “My aim at the time was to gain her trust and talk to the police about what was happening to her.”

The jury also heard a statement from Dr Richard Guilding who examined Girl 1 after she reported that Akhtar Dogar had raped her in September 2006.

He reported an “unusual” mouth injury “consistent with forceful oral sex”, and bruising on her neck and chest.

The nine defendants deny all the charges. They are:
