Call to move train station to Oxpens

OXFORD Civic Society says Oxford station should be moved to Oxpens as the heart of a new city transport hub.

The society believes the county and city councils and the Rail companies should seize “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to transform the city’s transport infrastructure.

It will set out its case at a meeting with Network Rail today, following talks with Chiltern Railways and the councils.

The idea of moving the station looked to have been written off as too costly.

But the Civic Society is hoping to breathe life into the idea of creating a “rail station fit for the 21st century” in Oxpens.

Its ideas would include a central bus station, a hotel, new homes and commercial developments.

Oxford City Council is pressing the rail property quango BRB (Residuary) to release land near the ice rink for up to 500 new homes.

And Network Rail is already implementing a £5bn programme over the next decade to improve routes from Paddington.

Tony Joyce, vice-president of the Civic Society, said: “Network Rail has recognised the need for a major expansion of Oxford station.

“More platforms are required.”

He said the availability of land at Oxpens provided “the opportunity for a genuine flagship development, which could retain and enhance green space along the riverside setting and transform one of Oxford’s less attractive central areas.”

Mr Joyce added that the society’s ideas would be an alternative to a revamp of the existing station and would address the problem of bus services operating from a variety of city centre locations.

Mr Joyce said the position of the existing station made the traffic bottleneck at Frideswide Square much worse.

The Civic Society wants the councils, together with the Local Enterprise Partnership, to fund a new technical and feasibility study.

Network Rail recently submitted proposals to the government for 2014 to 2019, including a £35m plan to improve the railway in and around Oxford.

Spokesman Sam Kelly said: “We recognise that increasing numbers of people are using the railway in Oxford.

“We are investing heavily to improve Oxfordshire’s railways and will continue to work with Oxfordshire County Council and other interested parties.”

County council spokesman Paul Smith warned: “It would be highly likely that the costs of moving the station would far outweigh the costs of improving the station on its current site.”

Oxford deserves a truly fantastic rail gateway, current situation is very underwhelming.

......really? I would never have guessed that.
If the City & County Councils are serious about improving Oxford, this has got to be the only option, Trains, Buses, Coaches & Taxis in one Central location, with trams too if they really think about it, it could be an architectural & engineering masterpiece.

THe problem is Diligaf, that the location at Oxpens isn't really that central. It might be a useful turning for buses which have come through the city centre, but for long-distance coaches it would be most unsatisfactory, as it would be for buses terminating from the west.

How about Cowley? I think Cowley and Blackbird Leys and Littlemore deserve their train station re-opening over spending money on moving to Oxpens. Money, time, resources and effort are constantly being put into the centre of town in order to generate income but this is at the expense and neglect of the areas where Oxford people live. The roads in the centre of town get completely redone whilst many roads around the ring road have hardly even been patched up for the past 30+ years. It's a disgraceful neglect of the people of this city quite frankly. We get our local facilities bulldozed, big business wins over people and small businesses, the University of Oxford an Brookes - gain, the numbers of non council tax paying residents rise. Who is really going to benefit from this?

We have a business park with a car factory, Oxfam and soon to be the HQ of another major company employing thousands of people. We've got a train station just up the road, built to serve the factory workers. Instead we're trying to improve facilities in the centre of town? This makes no sense.

Joe, the merits of the Cowley Branch Line are discussed elsewhere, see the tram story. It is a single-track line feeding into a north-facing junction at Kennington, heading towards Oxford. It may be locally useful but is no substitute for a full-size city station near the city centre, connecting ALL parts of the city to the rest of the country.

Yes the current station is too far west, but the centre of mass of the city's population, around St Clements, clearly has no room for a station so we have to do with what we've got.

At least the city centre is at the hub of the local bus network, and most of the city have a direct connection to it, if not to the Station itself.
