Offenders help brighten subway

Young offenders are helping an Oxford community transform an uninviting city subway into a vibrant mural.

Shoppers crossing London Road, Headington, will soon be able to feast their eyes on scenes of local life, when the street's underpass gets its own mural.

The paintings, designed by Headington Middle School pupils, are being painted over a couple of weekends by the Oxford Youth Offending Team.

Some of the artists are working at the subway as part of a reparation agreement after committing offences.

The scheme is similar to community service and helps offenders give something back to their community.

Freelance illustrator Duncan Mackenzie, and former police officer and amateur artist Roger Dicks, are helping the team with the murals, which provide a snapshot of Headington life.

Oxford United's former home, the Manor , is included, as well as Bury Knowle Park and other landmarks.
