SETFORD Vera 06/08/1928 - 20/01/2014 Born Alice Vera Hircock to Walter and Sarah Annie Hircock of Laxton, Northamptonshire with one older brother, William (Billy) who was sadly shot down outside of La Havre during the war aged 21 years. When Vera's Grandma was ill in hospital Vera loved visiting and seeing the nurses in their capes and hats and decided aged 9 years old that she wanted to be a nurse and so at the age of 18 she left Laxton and started her nursing training at St Helier hospital, Carlshalton. After completing her nursing training she then moved to the Leicester Royal to do her midwifery training part 1 and Woking hospital for part 2. After this Vera worked in various hospitals until joining the Colonial Service working in Aden, Algeiers and Gibralter as a ward sister. It was in Gibralter that Vera met her future husband Leslie, a Royal Naval Officer and they decided to move back to England in 1964 where Vera became the District Nurse and Midwife for Cumnor and the surrounding area working from the Botley surgery. Vera retired in 1986 and moved to Spain with her husband who sadly passed away in 1990. Vera left Spain and moved to North Leigh and soon started to help with the running of the Day Centre at Field House, Botley, something that she enjoyed immensley. Five years ago Vera moved to Didcot to be near her daughter Marion whom she was extremely close to. Marion stayed with Vera at home and with the help of her Doctor, district nurses, Sobell House and Marie Curie it meant that Vera got her wish and was able to pass away in her own home. Vera made many life long friends over the years and will be greatly and sadly missed by family and friends alike, she was an exceptional women. The funeral will take place at St. Michaels Church, Cumnor on Thursday 30th at 10.30am and everyone that knew her is welcome. No flowers please but you may make a donation to Sobell House or Marie Curie either at the Church or through S & R Childs, 4, Elms Parade, Botley.
