OXFORD United endured a costly evening as they crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Cheltenham Town.

On top of the result, Jon Meades picked up a three-game suspension for a straight red card in the second half, while Danny Rose appeared to sustain an injury.

It all came at the end of an evening which had begun well for the visitors, who controlled the opening 20 minutes.

But after failing to take advantage, Cheltenham hit back and at the end of a tight first half John Marquis headed them in front.

United's hopes of getting back into the game effectively ended when Meades was dismissed 22 minutes from time.

Koby Arthur rubber-stamped Cheltenham's progress into round two by heading in to make it 2-0.

As promised, U's boss Michael Appleton shuffled his pack from Saturday's 3-3 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge in Sky Bet League Two.

Michael Raynes, Meades and Will Hoskins, all in need of match fitness, came in along with Junior Brown, available again after suspension.

Johnny Mullins and Michael Collins were rested altogether, Carlton Morris dropped to the bench, while Alex Jakubiak was away on international duty with Scotland under 19s.

Hoskins, making his first start, was quickly into the action as the visitors made a bright start.

Inside four minutes he latched on to a clever pass from Danny Hylton in the area, but the striker could not get the ball out of his feet and Jack Deaman recovered to tackle.

Brown blazed a shot just over, while Hylton headed a Tom Newey cross over, all in the opening six minutes.

Aside from a mis-directed cross from Craig Braham-Barrett which hit the top of George Long's crossbar, it was all United for the first 20 minutes.

The closest they came was just before the quarter-hour mark.

Alfie Potter won a free-kick five yards outside of the Cheltenham box, prompting referee Brendan Malone to use the vanishing spray for the first time.

The ironic cheers from both sets of supporters had only just died down when Joe Riley stepped up and came close to finding the top corner.

It appeared the shot hit the post and went wide, but much to Cheltenham's dismay the referee awarded a corner.

Brown fired another shot just off target, before the home side gradually fought back.

Marquis had an excellent chance in the 20th minute, but from a left wing cross he only made contact with his shoulder, sending the ball wide.

It began a better spell for Cheltenham, who grew stronger as the half wore on.

A Jason Taylor effort which flew over was the sum total of their goal threat until the breakthrough came in stoppage time.

Cheltenham forced two corners in succession and from the second Marquis met an excellent delivery from Joe Hanks, guiding a powerful header into the net from eight yards.

United had plenty of the ball again once the second half got under way.

But clear chances were at a premium and too often they struggled to get decent support up to Hylton and Hoskins.

Their best moment early in the half came from an excellent turn and through ball from Brown.

It played in Riley, who got in behind the Cheltenham defence, but could not pick out a yellow shirt with his low cross.

The game began to drift as the home side looked happy to allow United to have the ball in and around the centre circle.

It badly needed livening up, but unfortunately when a flashpoint arrived midway through the half, it left the visitors with ten men.

Meades charged in for a loose ball, but Jason Taylor got there first. The Welshman did not go in maliciously, but his momentum turned it into an ugly challenge.

The referee had little hesitation in producing a red card, while Taylor was booked for his angry reaction.

Cheltenham quickly looked to kill the game off.

Wright was called upon to head a lob from Omari Sterling-James over after Long punched a free-kick straight to the midfielder.

It was only a brief reprieve, as the lead was doubled 12 minutes from time.

Wright got in a tangle in the area, allowing substitute Terry Gornell to win the ball and cross for Arthur to head in.

United's night got even worse before the end, as Rose hobbled off with a problem less than half an hour after coming off the bench.

The Asprey years were just as depressing,3 wins in 18 games at the start 78.
We have to trust in MA,but defeat again tonight will only add to what must be a fragile confidence in themselves.
Got to get couple of wins on the bounce ,but where are they gonna come from, dont see us getting much this weekend

The system or lack of it leaves us open to many times.4-4-2 wins games in this league. Yes i know this is a cup game, but it still matters. Smell the coffee,we need a propper Manager to at least set the team up properly. I know J Sale on Radio oxford will try to put a gloss on this defeat. You cant polish a turd, its still a defeat.

I am glad we are out of this cup as the importance is low. The manager and team should be judged on league form only which is our bread and butter. Hylton will improve as the season goes on. I am concerned if the goalkeeper from Sheffield U and Morris from Norwich have to play week in and week out in the league games as part of their loan moves. I believe this is true for Morris from Norwich. At the back we seem weaker than last year. Will be confident when Clarke returns in January as that may well be when he is fully fit. We do miss his quality. After 15 league games it will be pretty obvious where we may end up and whether fighting a relegation bottom 6 battle will occur. Keep losing and we then lack confidence. Winning just gives teams more confidence. I do not think we have ever recovered from when Wilder left us and the slow appointment of a new manager which was a bad decision to leave it so long. Since then we have declined pretty badly in form and the players are just not cutting it as a team. Long the goalie is not that good. I think Clarke is the best goalkeeper in division 2. The gates will return when we start winning.

Out of the JPT, who cares! Less games to get sending offs/injuries! However, this was pretty much the 1st team and they failed to bang the ball in the net again. Loanees that aren't cutting it but have to play. What a pickle. We are relying on luck that at least 2 teams are not too far ahead come January when MA gets a chance to sort this mess and do things properly. It may be a long 4 months.

I was there tonight. The 4231 system was used widely at the world cup but they are world class players (England excepted). I admire MA for sticking to his philosophy but at some point he will have to admit defeat in his belief before the defeats in the league become insurmountable. There's no shame in admitting you got it wrong but it's embarrassing if you close your eyes and hope it gets better next week. I'm happy to stick with the system until the end of October in the hope that the players will learn but after that.....

I would like to say that there was one "supporter" tonight and I use the term loosely who spent the entire match abusing the officials. If you read this or know the moron tell him to put the passion into supporting his team. He was an embarrassment.

I have only been watching oufc for 29 years so I don't profess to knowing it all, however, after the games against Wolves and Bournmouth I expressed my comments on here.
I said we looked a poor team with nothing up front at all, we are weak in midfield and that if big changes were not to come we would really struggle this year, I was given very bad feedback saying I did not have a clue, I was an idiot for talking such rubbish, WELL I HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO but I did. To many of you guys just excepting poor football for years and saying this will be our year to only fall away at the end of the season. Things will get worse coz MA doesn't seem the sort to admit when he's wrong, we are a poor football team with poor managers and directors in charge.

I was a fan of giving Appleton time but I have to say my patience is wearing thin. Appleton's record elsewhere isn't great and his naive approach to football at this level is becoming an embarrassment. Waddock was a dreadful appointment who left with an appalling record -Appleton appears to be matching him with his league results so far. The new regime are boys with toys and Appleton is the dog waiting for the whistle. It's too bizarre to contemplate that we can beat a team in a league above us and take a premiership club to extra time but we can't win in the worst league.

Fans will stop turning up and we'll be a non league club again if this appalling series of league results continue.

We are cursed. Relatively young league Clubs like Burton make established club like ours look amateurish when it comes to management and foresight.

Time is running out for the new regime they have to stop pretending they're midas touch businessmen and gett rid of the scrap wagon they drove in with.

Crawley established in league 1 Fleetwood have a chairman who puts his money where his mouth is, Morecambe have a new ground that isn't crippling them with debt. None of those clubs would have got bigger gates than us but here we are languishing in the bottom league whilst clubs with a shrewd ambitious Boards move upwards.
